Monday: I ran around the base all day with my new address trying to get myself in to the payroll system. It was hectic… but things here in Columbus are 10 times more relaxed compared to VMI, so really it was an easy day.
Tuesday and Wednesday: I was tasked by the Transition Office to fill in for the Lt. Col.‘s secretary of the 14th Operation Support Squadron. Basically, I showed up at 0730 to sit at a desk and answer the phone all day. It was by and large a boring time, but there were a few memorable moments. I sat outside the office of the man in charge of the ~900 people that make up the pilots, maintainers, etc… of the 14th OSS (that's a large squadron!) and even spent 30 minutes chatting with him about his job, life as a pilot, and that sort of thing. It was really nice to meet someone so high that took time out to talk to the little people like me :) I also met a Capt. that was looking for people to go to the MSU Vs. UM game and help sell soda. He talked me into going over to Starkville to do just that, with the added bonus that I could watch the game after half time.
Thanksgiving (Thursday): Durham, Nick, Adam, and I went to Ryan's for Thanksgiving diner. It was so good that we didn't do anything else for the rest of the day.
Friday: After getting up and going to Walmart at around 0900, I talked Durham and Nick into going on the base perimeter run. It was 10.45 miles! The base has nice water stations at almost every 2 mile mark and the runway looks awesome with the sun about 15 degrees off the horizon, so the pain I feel today was worth it.
Today: The football game. We met 4 airmen at the BX parking lot to caravan to the game. They were all part of the booster club and were really glad that we had showed up to help. They would have had a hard time without us. We got free parking passes and wristbands to get into the stadium. We got there 2 hours early and helped get all the drinks iced down. Then, for the game we reloaded the guys that cary around the drink trays in the stands. It was a pain because we had to constantly stick our hands into the ice water bucket, but it wasn't too bad. VMI is a small school with around 1300 kids there. This stadium had over 40,000 people in it. It was absolutely out of this world to me! It was well worth the trip to experience the game. Below is picture of Durham at Ryan's with pudd'n, and two shots of the stadium.
